Engineering Solutions to Fighting Forest Fires Other Presenters: Amy Bredes, Elizabeth Friend

Increasing forest fire rates are the cause of the overwhelming amount of acreage burned in the U.S. this year. This presentation focuses on how engineers finds ways to fight these fires. The presentation starts out by explaining the different components of fire and how it ignites. It then goes into indirect attack for fighting the fires. This includes fire barriers and backfiring. The presentation then goes into direct attack, which includes airplane modifications, and chemical retardants. Throughout this presentation, students will be introduced to a wide range of engineering disciplines.

Designing A Safe Roller Coaster Other Presenters: Amy Reynolds, Andrew Gabbeitt, Skyler Lafemina, Hilary Fiorentino, Frederick Hole, Denver Overend, Jane Edgington

Roller coasters are engineering marvels that provide the ultimate physical experience, but some people are fearful to take a ride on one. While there are many reasons, this presentation dispels the myths of poor safety and inherent risk involved with riding roller coasters. Three main aspects are analyzed including the effects of forces on the body, particular track design considerations, and restraining systems implemented on different coaster types.
